This game is a traditional game played by the Maori in New Zealand. The game is played by two players on a board of 11 x 11 squares. The central 3 x 3 squares is called the putahi, the aim of the game is to fill up the putahi with as many of your stones as possible. The two players take turns to place a stone on the board outside the putahi. When 3 stones of the same player line up in a straight line horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, the player can move one of the stones in that line to a square in the putahi. The remaining stones in the line cannot be used to form another line again. To put another stone into the putahi the player must then create a line of 4 stones, after that 5 stones, and so on. The putahi is divided into 4 groups: 1) the four squares on the sides, 2) two squares on opposite corners, 3) the remaining 2 squares on opposite corners, and 4) The centre square. After a player has put a stone into the putahi, the opponent earns the right to remove stones that are not in the putahi from the board. Putting a stone on a square in the first group in the putahi grants the opponent the right to remove 1 stone, the second group grants 2 stones, the third group grants 3 stones, and the last group grants 4 stones. The opponent can remove stones at any time of his choosing. Note also that the stones in the putahi can also be used to form lines. This opens up intricate strategies when deciding which square in the putahi to put a stone. When the putahi is filled up, the game ends. The player with the more stones in the putahi wins. The faster you win, the higher your rank.
