I can't work out why the snake dies. It seems to die if it bumps into something, including its own tail, but sometimes it just dies for no apparent reason. What's happening?

It will die if it bumps into something, including its own tail. And if the snake reaches the mouse cursor, it will spin around the cursor and eventually bumps into itself and so it dies. You have to put the mouse cursor ahead of the snake at all times to avoid this.
